Things To Do During Your Daytona Beach Vacation

Daytona Beach is one of the leading vacation destinations in the country. This isn’t just because of the nice weather and fun-loving locals, either. There are enough events here to keep you entertained throughout the year.

Considering a trip? Maybe plan your vacation around some of the following:

The Daytona 500

Daytona 500

The Daytona 500 is Daytona Beach tourism’s pride and joy, and the jewel in the NASCAR Cup Series crown. A 500-mile motor race taking place every year at the Daytona International Speedway, in sunny Florida, this is the first of two Cup races the city will hold throughout the year.

The event itself has a lot of history, having kicked off in Daytona Beach in 1959. It’s an event with worldwide visibility, considered the most prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, as well as being the series’ first of the year.

If the goal of your visit is to see Daytona Beach at its best, there’s literally no better time than mid-February during the Daytona 500.

The Greek Festival

Greek festival

One of the biggest sleeper hits of the Daytona Beach social calendar has to be the annual Greek Festival. Stop on by the annual St. Demetrios Daytona Beach Greek Festival in November, and you’ll experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Mediterranean in a massive outdoor festival.

Eat some delicious (and authentic) Greek food. Take in the dances and local music of the Greek community. Enjoy a gyro on foot as you take in the atmosphere, or sit down to a little fried squid and sweet, sticky baklava. Knock a few ouzos back (so long as you’re not driving), pick up a few souvenirs, and mingle with the Greek community.

Mark this in your diary as a solid outdoor-indoor family day out.

Hippie Festival

Hippie fest

Walk into any street in Daytona Beach and look to your left. Then look to your right. How many people can you see wearing tie-dye? If that number is larger than three, you’re probably in the middle of the annual Daytona Beach Hippie Fest. With more than a decade’s worth of history in the local community, this is a not-to-be-missed event in the Daytona calendar.

What do you have to look forward to at Hippie Fest? All-day-long shopping opportunities, dizzy with unique gifts, decor items, goods, and food. Tons of gorgeous, fascinating people in the streets. And dozens of great opportunities for dancing, wherever you look.

Cap off a great day out in the bell-bottomed magic, you’ll take in the main event: a massive concert featuring big-name acts. Join the crowds, try out some new moves, and party like it’s literally 1969, at the annual Hippie Festival.

Places to Visit During Your Vacation in Daytona Beach

Don’t let all the fun times and partying fool you, though. Daytona Beach is also rife with awesome landmarks and historical sites to take in a nice relaxing, educational afternoon. Below are just a few to consider:

Sugar Mill Ruins

Just a short drive down from Daytona Beach is New Smyrna’s historic Sugar Mill Ruins. A landmark built from the ruins of a 19th-century sugar mill, this 17-acre site is home to a huge variety of nature trails and camping areas, all perfect for a sunny afternoon out with the family. Don’t miss it if you’re keen to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a couple of hours.

The Casements

This Riverside Drive mansion is one of nearby Ormond Beach’s most popular landmarks. It’s perhaps most famous for being the former residence of infamous business magnate, John D. Rockefeller. Now owned by the city of Ormond Beach, the house is a historic landmark, and also home to an onsite park, perfect for a relaxing walk out in the Florida sun. At specific times of the year, the casements are also home to a series of fantastic local concerts.

The Halifax Historical Museum

For such a fun-loving, beach-goer’s city, Daytona Beach is actually home to a surprisingly rich local history. Pay a trip to the local Halifax Historical Museum, and you’ll be able to take in the area’s rich and vibrant past, with exhibits dedicated to everything from the obvious (the history of racing in the local area) to Native Americans Timucuans, Victorian households, the Florida Civil War and the legacy of Mary McLeod Bethune. With all of this and so much more, this is a great way to really take in the full Daytona Beach experience.

Where to Eat in Daytona Beach While Vacationing

After all that adventuring, you’re probably feeling a little peckish. Not to worry – Daytona Beach is home to some of the best food America’s East Coast has to offer. Sit down to a great meal at any one of the following awesome establishments.

Caribbean Jack’s

Pull up a glider booth outside in Daytona’s own Caribbean Jack’s and discover Daytona Beach hospitality. For that genuine seaside eatery experience, you’ll enjoy your meal within eyesight of the nearby marina with the sound of seagulls and ocean waves in the background. The Caribbean Fish Tacos, slaw, and black bean and mango salsa all bring their own signature tastes to the menu. And with a waterfront fire pit to keep you warm, even the chilliest nights out turn into magical events you’re sure to remember long after your trip is over.

Oyster Pub

For fans of sports and delicious seafood, Oyster Pub is not to be missed. On any given Friday night, Daytona Beach locals flock to this out-of-the-way local bar to throw back some great food and drink down some cool drinks with friends. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, and with something always going on, there’s never a shortage of reasons to visit.

Looking for the best their menu has to offer? It has to be the chargrilled oysters. Get a dozen fresh oysters in the bar’s special sauce and get ready to soak in the secret taste that Daytona locals love best.

Crabby Joe’s Deck and Grill

When it comes to breakfast lunch and dinner in the world’s most famous beach, Crabby Joe’s is a local favorite. And, if there’s one thing we’ve learned during our time in the travel industry, the best way to appreciate a town on vacation is to “do it like the locals”. Take in a meal inside or on the deck, listen to a little music or dine al fresco, with the nearby paddleboarders and the crashing of the waves as your soundtrack.

With this local treasure’s selection of delicious breakfast entrees and seafood items, breakfast delights, and sweet treats, there’s more than enough to choose from and your choice will always be delicious.
